Clarion University Resource Room

The Clarion Call report
Clarion University

Clarion University provides its students with access to a resource room that contains a variety of products that students may need. The room was put in place to help alleviate the burden of finances on students.

The Resource Room is located in the Gemmell Student Center in the main hallway. Any student can gain access to the room by simply going to the Gemmell Information Desk and asking the student worker to open the room for them or by asking for assistance from Kelly Ryan, the assistant director of leadership and involvement, who will also unlock the door for students that need to get items.

The Resource Room contains food items as well as personal hygiene items. Typical food items are things such as canned vegetables, canned soup, pasta, macaroni and cheese, cereal, breakfast bars, etc. Personal care items typically include toilet paper, paper towels, laundry supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream, razors, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, feminine hygiene products and some school supplies.

Want to help keep this resource going? Anyone can donate to the Resource Room. The room is in constant need of supplies to support students. Food items that are in high need tend to be pastas, breakfast items, snack items, soups and canned meats. Other products in continuous need are paper towels, toilet paper, soap, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Donations can be taken to the ABLE office, which is located in Gemmell room 249, to Kelly Ryan. Any nonperishable food items or personal hygiene items are accepted and very much appreciated.

Danielle Haley, member of ABLE, finds the room invaluable, stating, “For ABLE, the room is another way for us to reach out to the community and provide help, and this community hits a little closer to home because it is students just like us. We all understand that it is hard, and money isn’t all that easy to come by while in college, and we know that not everyone has the money to buy everything they may need. So, it is important to us because we are helping other students live more comfortably.”

ABLE also hosts Stuff-a-Truck in both the spring and fall semesters. This is a week-long event where donations are collected to give to the local Food Stock Program. ABLE is working on setting up more programs but all of the details have not been fully worked out yet.
